The fault tolerance in Tricon is realized through three module redundancy (TMR) architecture. Tricon provides error free and uninterrupted control in the event of hard failures or temporary failures from internal or external sources in components.
Tricon adopts a completely triple architecture design, from the input module to the main processor and then to the output module. Each I/O module contains circuits with three independent channels, also known as branches.
Each channel on the input module reads process data and passes this information to its respective
Main processor. The three main processors communicate with each other using a proprietary high-speed bus system called TriBus. Once per scan, the three main processors synchronize and communicate with their two neighbors through TriBus. Tricon votes on digital input data, compares output data, and sends copies of analog input data to each main processor.
The main processor executes the control program and sends the output generated by the control program to the output module. The output data is voted on the output module as close to the field as possible, allowing Tricon to detect and compensate
Any errors that may occur between voting and driving the final output to the scene.
For each I/O module, the system can support an optional hot spare module, which will take control if a fault is detected on the main module during operation. The hot spare location can also be used for online system maintenance.
